Lawn Mowing Services

red and black riding lawn mower mowing the lawn
There are several reasons to hire a professional grass cutting service company. Aside from not having the time or energy to perform the task yourself, you may not have the money to invest in the right equipment or the knowledge to produce the perfect grass. Don’t forget about the time and cost of running to fill the gas can and then heading to pick up fertilizer and other necessary essentials. A lawn cutting service company can also get supplies in bulk at a cheaper rate due to the high volume of yards they have to tend to.

We all have to do lawn mowing to keep the grass from getting too high but there are certain times to cut the grass that you might not be aware of. Don’t cut your lawn on a schedule. A lot of times, people only have time to cut the grass on certain days of the week and they know if they don’t get to it that day then it will have to wait another week. That makes sense in today’s busy world but cutting the grass too soon could actually cause damage. Damaged grass could lead to an ugly and even diseased lawn!

Never cut grass when it is wet, isn’t at the right height or too soon after applying new seed or laying new sod. New seedlings need to grow to the right height, about 3 inches, before receiving their first cut. New sod needs time to root into the soil, usually 2-3 weeks. Keeping blades at the right height protects grass from the sun and other elements, keeps it healthy to absorb water and nutrients and looks and feels thick and plush. This might mean you would have to mow more often, but that is also beneficial for grass. As long as you are keeping your grass at the right height, frequent mowing will help grass grow thicker and spread evenly. Healthy lawns look better, are more resilient and show the line pattern better.

Don’t mow in the same pattern each time and mow at different angles to help the grass stand straight up and prevent ruts in the yard. Mowing the same each time trains the grass to lean in one direction. It can also cause damage due to soil impaction, which leads to less ability to absorb water, air and nutrients. Diagonal lines also give a beautiful visual effect.

The best time to cut the grass is in the morning, about 8-10 am, before the heat of the sun beats down or early evening, 5-7 pm, after the sun has moved from directly overhead. Either way, make sure the grass has dried from any rain or morning dew. It’s best to leave the clippings on the lawn to be reabsorbed unless you are performing your first spring maintenance.

Sharpen your Blades

Mowing with dull blades can cause harm to your grass. It could tear up the grass and cause the edges to turn brown. It’s very stressful! Unhealthy grass leads to an ugly lawn with yellow patches, dead spots, insect infestation and weed overgrowth.

Although mowing is an essential step in getting and retaining a healthy thick green grass, it is only ONE of the steps involved in lawn care. Don't forget to check out all of our service pages for step by step instructions, tips for a healthy lawn and general guidance for the best do it yourself care.

So what are the other steps? There are many but our suggestion is to start your lawn care process early! It’s important to begin in early spring so that your lawn will start the year off right. Nothing beats preventative measures. Although lawn restoration is possible, and costly,  it’s better to start off right and stay on track and your efforts will show!

The ideal time to begin is after the ground temperature remains at 55 degrees or above. This is usually somewhere between February to April, depending on the climate you live in. Typically we start when the first mow of the season is needed, clean up the clippings after mowing, then water and aerate the lawn. Apply your lawn fertilization and treatments a few days later. Overseed the lawn for a thick growth of healthy grass. Don't be greedy with seeds, this will ensure a plush fluffy grass grows. Remember to water daily until the new grass has grown out! After the new grass reaches about 3 inches you can return to watering your lawn about once a week or about an inch of water per week. Adding lawn sand is a good measure for weed control.

Mow the lawn for routine maintenance but don’t cut the grass too low. 3 inches high is the standard recommendation. This will definitely mean that you will need to mow more often but it is the best action for the grass and keeps the roots healthy. Fertilizer and treatments should be applied throughout the warmer weather with the last application of the year being a good winterizing product.

Proper lawn maintenance is indeed very involved but following the steps on our service pages will give you a great start to understanding how to perform the tasks yourself.
