Lawn Aeration Services

Is aerating your lawn necessary?

The answer to that question is, yes and no. There are factors that determine if your lawn needs aerating. However, unless you have planted new grass or installed sod within the last year, any lawn would benefit from aeration. In fact, the best looking lawns don’t usually go two years without it!  Contact Wood River Lawn Care today for a free estimate and we will assess your lawn for all of the necessary services. You will be glad you did!

If your lawn gets a lot of use, kids running around or dogs playing in the yard daily, or if you have more than an inch thick of thatch or heavy clay soil then your lawn NEEDS to be aerated. You can even check the condition of your grass for yourself. Dig up about 5-6 inches of grass and soil. If the roots only go 1-2 inches then you have impaction and will need to aerate the lawn to keep the grass healthy.

Aeration improves the air flow into the soil and helps with water absorption and fertilizer uptake. It helps grass build stronger roots which increases the tolerance to extreme hot or cold weather. Healthy roots are key to grass health.

If you plan to take the task on yourself, you should start by mowing and watering the lawn about two days beforehand. The soil should have just the right amount of saturation to complete the job. Too much water and the soil will stick inside the machine instead of falling back onto the grass. Too little water and the machine will have a hard time penetrating through the ground. Apply fertilizer and treatments immediately after and then follow the lawn seeding instructions in the Lawn Care section.

Lawn aeration is hard work and time consuming without the proper tools because you need to go over the entire lawn in at least two different directions. 20-40 holes per square foot is the recommendation. Feel free to contact us at 618-491-6478 to receive a free estimate of our lawn aeration services.

Lawn aeration is just one step in the continuous lawn care process to getting and retaining healthy thick green grass. So what does good lawn maintenance include? The short answer is that there are many steps. Luckily, we have the long answer too. Whatever you do, it's best to start early! It’s important to begin in early spring so that your lawn will start the year off right. It's true that nothing beats preventative measures. Although lawn restoration is possible, and costly,  it’s better to start off right and stay on track and your efforts will show!  So when and where do you start? Read on and don't forget to check out all of our service pages for the correct steps and the correct times and general guidance and tips.

The ideal time to begin is after the ground temperature remains at 55 degrees or above. This is usually somewhere between February to April, depending on the climate you live in. Typically we start when the first mow of the season is needed, clean up the clippings after mowing, then water and aerate the lawn. Apply your lawn fertilization and treatments a few days later. Overseed the lawn for a thick growth of healthy grass. Don't be greedy with seeds, this will ensure a plush fluffy grass grows. Remember to water daily until the new grass has grown out! After the new grass reaches about 3 inches you can return to watering your lawn about once a week or about an inch of water per week. Adding lawn sand is a good measure for weed control.

Mow the lawn for routine maintenance but don’t cut the grass too low. 3 inches high is the standard recommendation. This will definitely mean that you will need to mow more often but it is the best action for the grass and keeps the roots healthy. Fertilizer and treatments should be applied throughout the warmer weather with the last application of the year being a good winterizing product.

Proper lawn maintenance is indeed very involved but following the steps on our service pages will give you a great start to understanding how to perform the tasks yourself.
